Statement / For the past two years, I've made work in Rockaway, Queens, about Rockaway, Queens. While my work isn't social activism directly, it's very much about an appreciation for the unique community there and its relationship with the natural environment, which being a beach community is constantly under threat. It's important to me to show the work in the community to bring them together to connect around a love and appreciation for the uniqueness of this incredible setting.

Press Release / Michelle Zassenhaus is a photographer and multi-media artist based in Brooklyn and Rockaway Park in New York City. Her new solo exhibition, “Fathom”, is her second presentation at Rockaway Artists Alliance in as many years.

Fathom, meaning (1) to deeply understand and (2) a measure of the depth of water, is a double entrendre for Zassenhaus’ exploration of the Rockaway Peninsula. In her series “Ten Hours”, Zassenhaus places pinhole cameras at the water’s edge to record 10-hour-long exposures, piling time onto the surface of the film, resulting in large-scale beach horizons that resonate like color field paintings, meditative trances, even breath itself. Also presented: “(Untitled) Rockaway Series”, an ongoing series of thematic essays in which Zassenhaus explores the sense of the place among the dark of night, a central theme in Zassenhaus’ work. Amid colorful, other-worldly long exposures emerge the adjacent and contrasting forces of nature and industry, urban and natural environments, presence and absence, decay and growth that uniquely comprise the environment of the Rockaway Peninsula. Much like Rockaway exists at the edge of a metropolis, Zassenhaus’ work contemplates the spaces found at the periphery.

“Fathom” is on view at Rockaway Artists Alliance sTudio 6 gallery June 1 - June 9, 2019. An opening reception will be held Saturday, June 1, 4-7pm.

MICHELLE ZASSENHAUS (b.1974) received her BFA in Art Photography from Syracuse University’s School of Visual and Performing Arts. Her photographs have been exhibited across the United States. Her work has been recognized by Photo District News, L’Œil de la Photographie, and Don’t Take Pictures.
